After searchers located climbing gear and detected signals from avalanche beacons used by the six missing climbers on Mount Rainier, 3,300 feet below the groups last known location, Park service presumes the climbers are dead and there is “no viable chance of survival.” The group of climbers was last heard from on the third day of their planned five-day expedition, when they were preparing to set up camp for the night.

At this point in time investigators do not know the exact reason for the disappearance, however they believe it is most likely due to an avalanche or large fall. Out of the six climbers, two of them were guides with Alpine Ascents International, and the group’s leader was Matt Hegemen, a veteran climber that has a love for climbing and has reached Rainier’s summit more than 50 times.
