genevieve

With summer upon us in the Truckee Tahoe region, we would like to share with you some of our favorite hiking trails in the area. From Donner to South Lake, the Tahoe area has some of the best hiking around, from lakeside strolls along Tahoe, to long climbs in Desolation Wilderness; we’d like to highlight some of our personal favorites.

Lake Genevieve starts on Tahoe’s West Shore in the Meeks Bay area, from there it climbs some 1,200’ up towards the crest and to a string of some beautiful subalpine lakes. The trail winds its way up from the west shore amongst firs, pines, and cedars, before placing you at the first of a string of lakes, Lake Genevieve. It is about 4.5 miles one way to Lake Genevieve, however if you are feeling ambitious, you can check out one of the many more lakes to come starting with Crag Lake, and on to Hidden Lake and Shadow Lake. Crag Lake, just a few hundred yards beyond Lake Genevieve is another beautiful lake that is great for swimming, so if you have the time, adventure on over and check out the pristine waters and beautiful surrounding granite cliffs. Not only the string of lakes beautiful, but the surrounding mountains really make you feel like you have journeyed into the deep, secluded backcountry.

Listed as moderate in difficulty, and lasting about 4-5 hours, the Lake Genevieve trail is great for those hot summer days when you want to get away from the crowds of Tahoe.

Note: A Wilderness Permit is required.
