Llamas

The John Muir Trail, a gorgeous trail in the California Sierra that stretches from the Yosemite Valley all the way to Mt. Whitney. Running 210 miles through vast expanses of wilderness and High Mountain peaks, the John Muir Trail is a photographers dream. From the windy Merced River, to the open McClure Meadow, all the way to the highest point in the continental US, the JMT offers endless photography gold. However, camera equipment is not light, and with mountain pass after mountain pass it is difficult enough to carry the necessary backpacking equipment let alone haul pound after pound of camera gear. While this most certainly poses quite the quandary, there are ways to get around lugging massive amounts of camera equipment yourself. Located in the foothills of the Sierra, in Sonora California is Potato Ranch Llama Packers, a pack company that allows you to rent llamas to hike in the Sierra with.

Providing llamas to hikers and adventurers for a small daily fee, it is now possible for photographers, elderly, or families with small children to enjoy all the Sierra’s have to offer without the inconvenience of a hefty pack. Extensive animal training is not necessary either, after a short two hour training you are set loose on the trail with the llamas for an adventure your likely not to forget. This would be a very cool experience worth checking out, the llamas can pack up to 60lb. and spend a weeks in the backcountry, allowing you a trip you couldn’t experience otherwise. While it may be a little too late to book llamas for this summer, it is good information for future reference, Potato Ranch recommends booking at least 6 months in advance. So start planning for next summer and possibly look into taking a furry friend into the backcountry with you.
